How Often Should I Clean My Water Feature??

The cleaning frequency for a water feature depends on its type, size, and exposure to debris. Here’s a general guideline:

Small Water Features (Fountains, Bubbling Rocks, Container Gardens)

Every 1–2 Weeks:

  1. Remove leaves, dirt, and algae buildup.
  2. Check the pump for clogs and clean filters.
  3. Wipe down surfaces to prevent mineral deposits.
Refill with fresh water if evaporation occurs.

Medium Water Features (Pondless Waterfalls, Small Ponds, Reflecting Pools)

Every 2–4 Weeks:

  1. Skim out debris, remove sludge, and/or other sediment buildup.
  2. Clean the pump and filter system.
    1. Can use an algaecide or beneficial bacteria to prevent green water.

Large Water Features (Koi Ponds, Large Waterfalls, Streams)

Every 1–2 Months:

  1. Clean out excess algae and debris.
  2. Check and service your pump to ensure it’s working properly
  3. Inspect fish health (if applicable).
  4. Deep clean and drain once or twice a year if needed.

Pool Water Features (Sheer Descents, Deck Jets, Waterfalls)

Weekly Maintenance (Part of Pool Care Routine):

  1. Brush away scale or calcium buildup.
  2. Remove leaves and debris from the water.
  3. Ensure proper water flow and filtration.
